Care2.com is superb website that invites you to make a difference to our planet. The online community encourages everyone to step up and support their causes. One of the largest online communities dedicated to making a difference, Care2 offers everyone a chance to help out.

One of our favourite sections is called Care2Donate, a site dedicated to allowing everyone to support causes by clicking one link – simple! You can support numerous causes, from saving the rain forest to helping children. Anyone can participate in “races,” a journey to raise numerous supporters for a specified cause. Every day, you may only click once for each cause. Once you click, you can further support the cause by inviting your friends to join in or by downloading and using the special ‘Care2 Toolbar’.

You can also register to be a Care2.com member so you can track your progress and see how much you have helped the world. You can also receive reminders that remind you to click each day.

Although donating over the Internet at other websites can be risky, Click2Donate is not. Each time you click for free, the site’s supporters will match your click by donating real money to these real causes and help to make a difference in the world.

Care2 has a member database of over 9 million people – not bad for an environmental awareness website. For every click in the “Race to Stop Global Warming,” one pound of carbon is offset. If these 9 million members along with other nonmembers clicked to support this cause, over 9 million pounds of carbon will have been offset each day! This would greatly help the environment. If this happens every day for an entire year, over 3 billion pounds of carbon would be offset! Talk about changing the world!

The Environmental Defense declares the petroleum extraction programme in Canada is the “Most destructive project on earth.” The programme is based in the oil sands of Canada and is known as the Tar Sands Project. What is particularly alarming is that even Peter Lougheed who was the Alberta Premier who began the project is requesting a drastic change in the project.

The report issued by Environmental Defense, a non profit group, points the finger at the Canadian government for ignoring the huge levels of greenhouse gases emitted by the Tar Sands Project.

The Programme Manager, Matt Price said “Ottawa is letting the Tar Sands hold Canadians hostage on global warming,” and “The federal government is not using laws already on the books to require companies to reduce emissions and clean up their toxic mess.”

From Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Chief Allan Adam said “Nobody lives closer to the land and water than we do, and we’ve seen bad changes over the past twelve years,” adding that “As goes the water so go we, and we are seeing strange diseases now.”

A Fort Chipewyan town doctor made a public complaint over the excessive level of abnormal diseases in the town in 2007; however, he was rebuked by Canada’s national health agency. Aaron Freeman, the policy director of Environmental Defense said in his concluding remarks, that “This is Canada’s problem. Our federal elected leaders need to clean it up or shut it down.”

“There’s so much pollution in the air now that if it weren’t for our lungs there’d be no place to put it all.”
Robert Orben

“It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment.”

“We say we love flowers, yet we pluck them. We say we love trees, yet we cut them down. And people still wonder why some are afraid when told they are loved.”

“Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints. Kill nothing but time.”

There are many more inspirational green quotations over at The Quote Garden. Definitely worth a read if you are in need of reminding just how bad we are treating the planet!
