African Lion Deaths Linked to Climate Change

By treehugga | July 21, 2008

Droughts and downpours exacerbated by climate change allowed two diseases to converge and wipe out large numbers of African lions in 1994 and 2001, according to a new study.

Lions regularly survive outbreaks of canine distemper virus (CDV) and infestations by a tick-borne blood parasite called Babesia. But both normally occur in isolation. In 1994 and 2001, however, a “perfect storm” of extreme drought followed by heavy seasonal rains set up the conditions for the two diseases to converge, the study said. The effect was lethal: The synchronized infections wiped out about a third of the Serengeti lion population in 1994. The nearby Ngorongoro Crater lion population experienced similar losses in 2001.

Stop Shark Finning

By treehugga | May 27, 2008

blue sharkMore than half of the world’s ocean-going sharks are at risk of extinction, a new review concludes. Specialists with IUCN (formerly the World Conservation Union) found that 11 species are on the high-risk list, with five more showing signs of decline. Sharks are particularly affected by over-fishing as they reproduce slowly. The scientists are calling for global catch limits, an end to the practice of removing fins, and measures to minimise incidental catches (bycatch).

Prince Charles - Save The Rainforests

By treehugga | May 19, 2008

Prince Charles says there needs to be rewards for preserving the rainforest and therefore helping to prevent climate change. He called for a mechanism to be devised to pay poor countries to prevent them felling their rainforests. The prince says that the forests provided the earth’s “air conditioning system”.
He said it was “crazy” the rainforests were worth more “dead than alive” to some of the world’s poorest people. The world’s forests store carbon in their wood and in their soils. Read the rest of this post »
